2023 is “the most promising year yet,” says Mountain Blue
Australian blueberry specialist Mountain Blue has stepped up its research and development efforts this year, under the direction of owner and founder Ridley Bell, to develop new varieties that will revolutionize the berry category.
The company said its goal is to discover and optimize genetic components that lead to the creation of extraordinary berry varieties that will delight consumers with exceptional flavor and size, but also simplify growing and harvesting for growers.
He described 2023 as his most promising year yet, with his dedicated team “making significant steps in identifying seedlings and selections with the potential to deliver outstanding results.”

The company said it has received enthusiastic feedback from international licensees who have visited its farms. David H Jackson of Family Tree Farms commented: “I have toured the new Mountain Blue blueberry seedlings for each of the last 13 years. The 2023 seedlings are overall the best I have seen. And that's saying a lot, since many of Ridley's varieties are industry standards.
“Mountain Blue is known for its flavor, crunch and size, as well as its production, ease of harvest, self-pollination and flowering, which are also top priorities. The combination of all of these qualities is what I found in the 2023 seedlings. I am very encouraged by the Mountain Blue blueberry genetics, which continue the competitive advantage with growers, retailers and consumers.”
Bell said the company had meticulously evaluated more than 20.000 seedlings and numerous field selections. “Our team is constantly pushing the boundaries of our improvement work, raising the bar in several aspects. These quality improvements will soon translate into new commercial varieties of berries,” he commented.
“We have identified different production windows throughout the season, ranging from very early harvests to very late harvests. Our general objective is to develop candidate berries for each of these windows.
Mountain Blue said its research and development efforts are meticulously aligned with the needs of producers and consumers, forging a fruitful partnership that will benefit everyone involved.
Bell's efforts have not gone unnoticed. Recently, the North American Blueberry Council awarded him the prestigious Duke Galletta Award for his contributions to cranberry horticultural research. The award celebrates those who have demonstrated leadership and excellence in blueberry research, driving the growth and development of the blueberry industry.
“I am deeply honored to receive the Duke Galletta Award,” Bell said. “This recognition is a testament to the dedication and hard work of the entire Mountain Blue team, and our relentless pursuit of excellence in blueberry research and agricultural practices.”
