Mexico: Berry season is ahead of initial estimates

According to information provided by Aneberries, the association of berries producers in Mexico, 11 (11-17 of March) of the 2018-2019 season has been exported 41.000 metric tons (MT) of berries.

According to the association indicated to PortalFrutícola.com, the initial estimate of blueberries was 23.510 TM for that date.

According to they indicated "the peaks of production will come by the end of March and the numbers will close between 13 and 15 million".

"During April we expect harvests during the production peak ... with what could close in total of the season in 48.000 TM", they affirmed.

They explained, in addition, that as far as challenges are concerned, they continue around the varied climatic conditions, manpower and the sustainable use of natural resources.

In addition, they said that currently "we are working on sustainable materials in production and packaging and in conjunction with the plastics industry we will review the advances in the research of more sustainable materials."

They added that the 97% of production is sent to the markets of the United States and Canada, while the rest is distributed among 33 countries, "we can speak of an 50% between EU countries and Asian countries," they said.

Regarding new markets, commented that for the moment none has been opened.

Finally, they remarked that as far as the future of the sector is concerned, they expect it to maintain its growth in area and volumes.

Adding that they hope that the challenges for new technologies more friendly to the environment, labor and promote social responsibility are those that stand out in the coming seasons.
