Spain, the importation of fruit and the role of Italy
Although Spanish exports grew in volume by 88% between 1995 and 2020, there was strong growth in imports of fresh fruits and vegetables, which increased by 190% during the same period. The Spanish market, therefore, also represents an opportunity.
Despite a domestic production of fresh fruit and vegetables of over 25 million tons, the strong growth in imports in Spain is due to several factors.
In the first place, the growth of the Spanish population, which went from 40 to 47 million inhabitants in the period 1995-2020. At the same time, the economic growth of these 25 years has also affected, excluding the various fluctuations and in particular the 2008 crisis, which has favored a change in the diet of Spaniards, for example increasingly inclined to exotic fruits.
Berries, strawberries, raspberries and blueberries reached 2020 thousand tons in 140, of which 80% are imported from Morocco and 9% from Portugal. In the case of blueberries, Peru also plays an important role, accounting for 3% of imports.
Regarding exotic fruits, pineapple, avocado and mango have experienced exponential growth, so much so that total volumes have gone from 35 thousand tons in 1995 to 395 thousand tons in 2020. The pineapples come mainly from Costa Rica, the Mangoes for 60% from Brazil and 25% from Peru, avocados for 46% from Peru, 8% from Morocco, while Chile and Colombia maintain a 6% share.
