South Africa: Successful first season of blueberries ends
United Exports introduced the blueberry cultivar Oz to South African producers at 2012. The first plantations were made in 2013 and the first crops were exported in 2014. The second harvest has just finished and the packaging tasks for Eastern Cape producers will end in late January.
The season runs from March to January and the first crops bear fruit in the north of the country, then the southern ones arrive, and the maximum season is reached in August / September.
The company has historically focused on stone fruit and this year was the first with a commercial crop of blueberries. «The season has exceeded expectations. The bulk of the blueberries have been exported to the United Kingdom, Europe, the Far East and the Middle East. Obviously, it's still there, but the quality has been good," says Elaine Laubscher, of United Exports.
The cultivar produced has been created to have a useful life of 42 days, which would allow exports by sea. The cultivar has been obtained by Early Blue, from Australia. United Exports has the exclusive license in South Africa, North America and South America. Currently, these berries they are being marketed under the OZ blueberries brand.
As it was intended, most of the blueberries arrived on the European market just as the berries Polish, around August, and before the arrival of the Chileans.
