David Yarborough: the southern highbush expanded the global geography of the blueberry

The professor emeritus of the University of Maine analyzes the contribution of genetic improvement to the expansion of the crop and the criteria that should guide the permanence or renewal of varieties in the fields.

Therefore, local validation remains crucial before replacing varieties that still deliver adequate productive and commercial results.

Genetics, supply and consumption growth

According to Yarborough, industry pioneers would be surprised by "the growth achieved on a global scale, driven by genetic improvement and by the positioning of the blueberry as a fruit associated with health."

Demand growth and supply expansion progressed in parallel. While consumption gained ground in various markets, genetics allowed for extended seasons and the development of fruit with attributes better suited to commercial demands.
