Marked increase in blueberry production in Ukraine
In this next season, Ukraine could sharply increase the supply of blueberries. This was stated by Tatiana Getman, project director «APK-Inform: Vegetables and Fruits», in his speech at the VII International Conference «Berries of Ukraine – 2016: frozen and fresh market».
«Blueberries have the largest production growth rate in the berry sector worldwide. In Ukraine, in 2015, the gross harvest of blueberries was 1.000 tons, while in 2016, according to forecasts, it could reach 1.300 or 1.500 tons. The area of commercial blueberry farms is growing rapidly: today it is estimated that they cover 1.000 hectares, 1,5 times more than the area of raspberries. In addition, blueberry plantations planted three or four years ago in Ukraine are starting to produce. Therefore, the supply of these products in Ukraine in the near future could increase dramatically.", says the expert.
According to Getman, a pronounced increase in blueberry production, as well as competition from cheaper blueberries, could cause the price of these products to be reduced by at least an 20 percent this coming season.
