Goodbye to junk food in schools in Chile

All spaces in which food is sold in schools in Chile should stop offering "junk food" or garbage, to become healthy kiosks from the June 27. This is established by one of the main provisions of the 20.606 Law on Nutritional Composition and its Advertising, a measure that together with the new labeling of foods and the restriction of advertising aimed at 14 children who are not healthy, aim to reduce obesity infantile, informed MINSAL.

The Minister of Health, Carmen Castillo, highlighted the efforts made to implement the new policies and recalled that "The statistics are pointing out that obesity is growing every day among our children. In fact, one in four students in first grade is already obese. That is why it is important to reinforce all the strategies and healthy kiosks are one of them ".

"We are working to develop healthy lifestyle habits, stimulating physical activity, timely detecting problems of overweight and obesity, improving the food that is delivered or sold in schools", affirmed the mayor of Santiago, Carolina Tohá regarding the changes that are approaching in the matter.

 Healthy kiosks

The Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education developed a "Guide to Healthy Kiosks and Snacks", material to support the implementation of the Law, which will be distributed at the 12.000 public and private educational establishments in the country.

This material provides information on sanitary conditions and the foods that can be sold and delivered within educational establishments.

Some examples of foods that should not be sold or delivered to schools are sweets, snacks (sweet and savory) and sugary drinks. On the other hand, some foods that may be part of the nutritional offer are fruits, dairy without the addition of sugars, nuts, non-sugar liquids and cereals that meet the limits established by the Ministry of Health.

Food labeling

Consulted by the intention of trade associations to appeal to the Office of the Comptroller General of the Republic to request a pronouncement regarding the products that must be labeled the June 27 with the label "HIGH IN", the Minister of Health pointed out that "We have been working with different institutions and companies for years" that are related to the regulations. He added that although they have the right to appeal to this instance, "In our opinion, we believe that the regulation that is going to take effect, with all that it means, is very clear".

The new food labeling seeks to reduce the high rate of obesity and the consumption of nutrients that are critical and that affect the health of the population. The proposed warnings will especially allow children to identify foods that have critical nutrient levels above what is allowed and recommended.

It should be remembered that food "ALTOS EN" they will not be able to offer toys, contests, accessories, stickers or other, because they attract the attention of children.
