Agrícola Cerro Prieto stops investment in Colombia and expects the first blueberry campaign in new farms in Peru

In a dialogue with Gestion.pe, the businessman explained that at least US$15 million were allocated to the construction of two full, one located in Chepén (La Libertad) and the second, in Irrigación Santa Rosa (Huara, Lima), which will be ready during the first quarter of 2023.

“The one in Chepén is already operational and the second one has already been built, we only need the electrical connection,” he said.

There it is expected to process the Hass avocado -in which the company has specialized in recent years- and soon, to pack its first tons of blueberries.

Cerro Prieto installed its first 600 hectares of the berries two years ago. They will obtain their first campaign during 2023. According to Bustamante, they would achieve availability of blueberries during the twelve months of the year, when a traditional campaign is usually four to five months.

"In almost the entire coast, it is now possible to obtain fruit almost twelve months of the year because we do not have very harsh or very rainy winters that limit pruning and harvesting, which allows us to have pruning at a distance and have fruit when the market requires it." », he explained. A plus is that the company installed blueberries with new genetics.

Colombian market

Cerro Prieto is one of the many agricultural companies that crossed borders and invested in the Colombian market, where it has hectares on three farms. To date, according to Bustamante, 500 new hectares of avocado have been installed.

However, the company has decided to stop its investment in Colombia. Even when? "What we want is to wait for the results of this first investment (which could take up to seven years for the avocado plants to reach their maximum production), and consolidate the production of blueberries in Peru," to resume new investments.

It should be noted that the agro-export company landed in Colombia to have availability of Hass avocado throughout the year, that is, during the months of August to March, when there is no harvest in Peru.

Finally, Bustamante stressed that the agro-export sector still faces “great challenges”, among them, the 300% increase in the price of sea freight and fertilizers, as well as an environment of oversupply in some crops.
