Water and agricultural efficiency: the challenge that also affects Mexican blueberries

The modernization of irrigation districts in Mexico raises a key discussion for high-value crops: how to better use water to sustain productivity, nutrition, firmness, and fruit quality. Blueberries Mexico 2026 will open a technical discussion on this topic, focusing on blueberry management.

Mexico is advancing a national agenda aimed at producing more food with more efficient water use. According to Forbes Mexico, the federal government projects that modernizing agriculture will boost food production by 21% in the areas where the technology is being implemented. The planned investment reaches 63 billion pesos to modernize 18 irrigation districts, covering an area of nearly 200 hectares.

The modernization project includes the installation of pipes, rehabilitation, and lining of canals and ditches, benefiting 225 producers in states such as Aguascalientes, Baja California, Coahuila, Chihuahua, Durango, Hidalgo, Guanajuato, Michoacán, Morelos, Sinaloa, Sonora, and Tamaulipas. The stated objective is to produce more food with less water.

The National Irrigation Technology Program also seeks to allocate the released water to human consumption and aquifer recharge, reinforcing the strategic nature of the resource for agriculture and for the development of the country.

From technified irrigation to water management in blueberries

For blueberryThe discussion about water management doesn't end with irrigation infrastructure. The key to productivity lies in how water is managed within the crop: when to irrigate, how to supplement nutrition, how to maintain plant health, and how to reduce stress episodes that can affect yield and quality.

Water is linked to nutrient absorption, plant physiology, vigor, firmness, and fruit performance at harvest and post-harvest. In a crop intended for fresh fruit, better water management also means sustaining more uniform, firm, and competitive fruit.

This conversation comes at a relevant time for Mexico, where the industry of blueberry It is advancing in new varieties, more technologically advanced systems and hydroponics, with the aim of strengthening productivity, size, firmness and post-harvest for demanding markets.

Blueberries Mexico 2026: water management, nutrition and quality

The 41st International Blueberries Seminar Mexico 2026, which will take place on the days And May 27 28 In Guadalajara, this will allow the conversation to delve into the technical aspects of cultivation. Its contribution will be to examine how water management relates to nutrition, physiology, plant stress, fruit firmness, and quality—topics included in the official program of the event.

In nutritional management, Jorge Esquivel ManterolaBlueberries Consulting will address strategies for maximum efficiency, while Gerardo NunezFrom the University of Florida, a presentation will cover rates, foliar standards, and nutritional decisions. Both topics allow for an examination of how water availability and management interact with nutrition and the plant's physiological response.

Stress management will be another point of connection. Daniel DiazA researcher from Michigan State University will present a talk on the use of biostimulants and bioregulators to reduce stress in blueberry plants. In turn, Reinaldo Campos-Vargas, from the University of Chile, will address the strategic management of calcium, magnesium and potassium as key nutrients for fruit firmness and quality.

A conversation for producers and exporters

For Mexican producers, the national progress in irrigation technology raises a practical question: how to translate better water control into management decisions in the field. blueberriesThis response is built by integrating irrigation, nutrition, physiology and stress management according to variety, zone and production system.

For exporters, the impact is reflected in the fruit's consistency, firmness, post-harvest life, and arrival quality. In an industry focused on fresh fruit, water plays a role in both productivity and the ability to maintain a consistent and competitive supply.

From that perspective, Blueberries Mexico 2026 is projected as an opportunity to review how water management in blueberries It can engage with nutrition, physiology, stress, and fruit quality, at a time when Mexico is placing water efficiency as an agricultural priority.
