Amazonas has great potential for the cultivation of berries
Sierra Exportadora affirmed that there are 7 thousand hectares to develop the sowing of the so-called "Fruits of the forest", which is an excellent business opportunity for producers.
Thanks to its cold agroclimatic conditions and different floors, Amazonas is par excellence a region with great potential for planting berries, experts stated during the I course on "The cultivation of berries: agro-export potential of the Andean zone of Amazonas." promoted by Sierra Exportadora.
This course, given within the framework of the first Bio Fair organized by the National University Toribio Rodríguez de Mendoza (UNTRM), aimed to demonstrate to the producers of the region the great business opportunity that would mean investing in the so-called "Fruits of the forest" like raspberry, blueberries, blackberry, aguaymanto and strawberry.
"Due to its quality of soil and varied climate, there are between 5 thousand and 7 thousand hectares suitable to start the cultivation of berries in Amazonas; if so, it would become part of the world boom of these delicious fruits, thanks to the global trend to adopt healthy eating habits ", said the coordinator of the Peru Berries program of Sierra Exportadora, William Daga Ávalos.
During his presentation 'Potentialities of the production of berries in Amazonas', he said that this trend strengthens the demand for calls "Super Fruits of the 21 Century", especially from the United States, Canada, Europe (United Kingdom, Germany and the Netherlands) and Asia (China and Japan).
On the other hand, the head of the entity in Amazonas, Víctor Rondinel Barcena, pointed out that the 21% of the total area (39.249.13 km2.) Of Amazonas is in the sierra zone, so the berries (raspberries and blueberries especially) can be sow in four of the seven provinces that make up the Amazon region: Chachapoyas, Luya, Bongará and part of Utcubamba.
He also said that a limitation is the connectivity to land suitable for this crop, so that initially the planting of these fruits will be developed on land that is close to the main paved roads on the route to Cajamarca.
Varieties identified
For the National Program Peru Berries of Sierra Exportadora, the blueberry variety, biloxi, is the best performer, both on the coast and in the Sierra because its fruit is of better quality. Although it adapts to 3.000 msnm (without frosts), the truth is that it develops much better between 1.000 and 2.000 msnm. The technification of irrigation is important.
Regarding the raspberry, it is sown in small quantities in Huánuco, Ancash, Lima, Arequipa, however, for three years, Sierra Exportadora has promoted its cultivation in Cajamarca and also in the Sierra de Lambayeque. The Heritage variety is the one with the best performance in the Andean area of our country.
Date
The executive president of Sierra Exportadora, Alfonso Velásquez Tuesta, indicated that the objective of the entity is to close the 2016 with approximately 3.200 hectares of blueberries, surpassing the 2.500 hectares last year. He also estimated that if the production of blueberries, also called blueberries, maintains its current growth rate, this year the export could exceed US $ 200 million.
