Cheap and abundant Chinese blueberries

The price of blueberries is clearly lower this year, with a difference of more than 200 yuan per kilo compared to recent years. The normal price of 1 kilo of blueberries does not exceed 40-60 yuan. The China Fruit Pricing website shows that the most recent price for Chinese blueberries has been 60 yuan, in general. Wild blueberries are usually sold for 100 yuan per kilo. The imported ones reach prices between 120 and 160 yuan per kilo.

The cranberries are divided, mainly, into two groups: wild and cultivated. The wild have a limited production volume and are difficult to harvest. Crops, on the other hand, require soil improvement and maintenance, which raises production prices. This makes the production costs of blueberries higher than those of other fruits.

The decrease in the price of cranberry is produced by the annual expansion of the area under cultivation of this fruit and the increase in production. A member of the Blueberry Association of Dandong City, Liaoning Province, explains that cranberries have become a high quality fruit in China. "As it is considered 'the fruit of the nobility', farmers everywhere are attracted to it. They quickly increase their production area to increase the volume of production. However, the processing industry is not at all prepared for these quantities. Since blueberries are sold fresh, conservation is another problem. As a result, it is difficult to avoid lower prices. "
