Argentina: Peru complicated the commercialization of blueberries

The tucumana arandanera campaign ended, in general, with a regular economic balance, since it is necessary to analyze what was predicted from the beginning. When the harvest began and shipments abroad became general from Tucumán, everything progressed well and the campaign was in normal operation, but when Peru entered as a supplier of fresh fruit things got complicated for the Tucuman producers.

Until the 18 or the 20 of October things were going very well, with a firm and high quality harvest, taking out fresh fruit that was packed in time and form and that was sent to the Tucuman airport for travel to international markets.

Everything was going well until that moment, but the emergence of Peru with its fruit prices became depressed and complicated things, since there were producers with a lot of fruit in the plant without harvesting, and having a not very large industry market, it collapsed quickly so things for the cranberry sector of Tucumán became very hard.

This happened was something that was already announced at the beginning of the campaign, in which producers and some leaders of the sector claimed that Peru could be a threat to the firstfruit produced in Tucumán, which finally happened and became a harsh reality. The truth is that you only have to wait for the final sales numbers of the fruit that arrived at the end of the season to the markets, to have a clearer idea about how the 2016 activity ended.

The real thing is that the province and the entire sector continue betting on an activity that, despite its commercial ups and downs, continues to bet with great momentum and strength on the development of this sector.

The works carried out by the provincial and national government at the local airport allowed the development of commercial logistics, which was able to place fruit in international markets at a good price by sending daily the precious cargo of tucuman blue berry to the United States and Europe, until it left strongly Peru.

Despite all this, the production of blueberries, after many years of efforts in the province, is strengthened, where joint work between the private and public sectors was one of the pillars to achieve it, imitating much of what was done with the provincial citrus activity.

Apratuc is born

The investment and care of blueberry fifths continue and producers are hopeful that well-managed things will allow them to be entrenched. Tucuman production began at the beginning of the year 2000, with the effort of a pioneer producer in the activity that later became the first president of Apratuc.

In the year 2004, when the activity took more boom and other companies appeared in our region as members of the productive environment, it is when they begin to meet and look for a way to organize. This association tries to cover the needs of working for the sector, seeking to promote the extension of the knowledge of the crop, defending the interests of the producers, and assisting them in the absence of technical-commercial information, in order to encourage their export spirit.

The years passed and reality is within reach, where the private effort paid off even with the serious inconveniences that appeared during all these years.

Undoubtedly, the agroecological characteristics of certain pedemontan areas of Tucumán allowed this development, but the invaluable support of the State in terms of research through the Eeaoc and logistics and commercial through IDEP, managed to strengthen more quickly and efficiently this activity.

The work at the Benjamín Matienzo International Airport is ready in terms of cold storage and loading platform, leaving something for later something already announced by the authorities that is to expand and fix the runway. The works allowed daytime loads to be made in a percentage of more than 70% of the total 5.400 total tons of cargo (fruit and packaging) dispatched on 78 flights, with full operation of the airport, with 10 daily commercial flights, carried out together. Achieving a high percentage of daytime flights, resulted in the incidence of insects in the cargo being lower, avoiding restrictions on the part of the markets

The objective of the sector is to work together with the State, seeking to grow and find new consumer markets, managing to strengthen an activity that begins to be very important in the economy of Tucumán.

The reality is that today there is a cargo terminal, which will allow other agricultural items to be moved over long distances, while new markets are achieved that cover production costs and freight costs.
