Argentina: Cranberry sector seeks to strengthen domestic consumption

More than two hundred producers and technicians from the cranberry sector met last week to set objectives and strategies for the 2017 harvest, which has already started with some early varieties in the Mesopotamia area of Argentina. At the 8 Regional Technical Conference on Blueberries, organized by the Association of Blueberry Producers of the Mesopotamia Argentina (APAMA), members of the sector from all over Argentina, together with Chileans, Peruvians and Uruguayans gathered.

During the opening speech, the president of APAMA, Alejandro Pannunzio, celebrated the recent labor agreement that was agreed upon by the Ministry of Labor and that, according to what he said, “not only guarantees the jobs of this crop but also promotes the creation of new".

"In Argentina we have a problem, in all regional economies, and that is that they are highly valued when talking but they are not valued when it comes to establishing laws that promote it. That's why we have to keep in mind that in the field of blueberries we have professionals of all kinds, we train our staff continuously and generate jobs, with foreign currency income. That is why we need a legal, tax and legal framework in which investments are developed"He added.

"Today with the national government we have the possibility of speaking, they have removed the withholding and we want to thank them. They also return VAT to us sooner, and also export duties more quickly. The country needs a law of regional economies, a more competitive dollar and that is why we positively see the national government's concern to maintain the competitiveness of the productive sector“, he finished.

For his part, the Minister of Production of Entre Ríos, Carlos Scheppens, present at the event, made a commitment to the producers by assuring that "we want to help them promote the consumption of blueberries in the province and in the republic, we need to enlarge the internal market". "These issues that are discussed here today are fundamental to enrich the discussions with our business partners, such as Uruguay and other countries“, the official concluded.

During the two days of the meeting, topics such as the commercial perspectives for the region will be discussed; the export landscape; climatic perspectives for Argentina and bordering countries; and phytopathological news in blueberries, among others. On Wednesday morning, attendees will participate in a visit to plantations in the Concordia area and conclude the conference.
