Betina Ernst: "The blueberry never ceases to amaze"

"The countries continue in their dynamics of constant varietal replacement, quality improvement, incorporation of technology and search for new markets"

"The blueberry does not stop surprising ..." is the phrase with which Top Info Marketing's analysis of the southern blueberry industry begins, and it is a very true statement, because the expansion of the crop to planetary dimensions continues without stopping, although not without face various challenges.

Where do we stand?

The report "Cranberry: Where do we stand?", Prepared by the agronomist Betina Ernst, from Top Info, collects the news of each region and its latest campaigns, noting that "this year was characterized by a strong increase in shipments , prices in general low, a shift towards organic and the threat of the US to restrict imports. On the other hand, the countries continue in their dynamics of constant varietal replacement, quality improvement, incorporation of technology, search for new markets, etc .; but also with labor, economic and political problems ”.

The report stops in detail in each country of the southern region and the following is a preview as an extract from each country. The full report and the detail can be seen in the 2021 edition of the BlueMagazine.

Peru and leadership

The report explains Peru's success due to the favorable conditions of dry and even climate, without extreme temperatures, enough water, large available surfaces, cheap labor, commercial openness and economic availability to invest that the country offers. As a factor of concern, he raises that in the varietal aspect, Biloxi continues to be the queen and "leaving this dominance is not easy at all in the agroclimatic conditions of Peru."

South Africa and its slow but steady progress

The report stipulates that South Africa had to face several technical and climatic challenges to implement the crop, but they have managed to overcome some of these thanks to suitable technologies and varieties. "It is currently in the midst of an expansionary phase, although its growth is slower than that of countries such as Peru, Morocco or Mexico."

Uruguay, provider of niches

This country had to face serious climatic problems and eradicate crops in areas that proved not to be optimal. “Added to this were high internal costs, outdated varieties, and increasing competition from new suppliers. This led to a reduction in area, production and a drop in exports. Like Argentina, Uruguay is working hard on varietal replacement, increased productivity and improvements in technology and logistics, to stand out as a quality supplier and to be able to supply special market niches ”.

Chile, an expert and mature industry

The report includes the challenge that Chile has had to face in the face of growing competition from new producers, such as Peru, Mexico and Morocco, especially at the beginning and end of the campaign, although in the middle of the season (December to February) Chile continues to be the main supplier.

Argentina: Rethinking the objectives

“Like Chile, a great effort is being made to transform itself into a quality supplier, taking advantage of the special taste of the Argentine blueberry. For which a great varietal replacement is being carried out. The traditional ones like O'Neal, Misty and Jewel are disappearing. Currently, Snowchaser, Star, San Joaquin, Farthing, etc. predominate ”, says Betina Ernst's report.

Regarding the advantage over neighboring countries, the report highlights that the country has a local market of growing importance to encourage domestic consumption.
