Blueberry boom: Morocco increases its exports by 12 in 10 years

In just ten years, Morocco has increased its blueberry exports twelvefold, rising from 12 tons in 7000 to 2014 tons in 83, representing an impressive annual growth rate of 000%.

This evolution is not a coincidence, but the result of a profound transformation of its agricultural model, which has made it one of the main emerging players in the sector worldwide.

The cranberry (blueberry) It is a fruit rich in antioxidants, highly sought after for its health-promoting properties. Its global consumption has grown steadily over the past 15 years, driven by healthy eating trends.

Morocco has taken advantage of a series of advantages that make it highly competitive: its privileged agroclimatic conditions, with a temperate climate and groundwater availability in some areas, allow for several harvests per year, something that other producing countries like Canada or Chile cannot achieve.

Its proximity to Europe makes it easy to ship fresh fruit in less than 72 hours to destinations such as Spain, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, reducing logistics costs and transportation times.

Furthermore, over the last decade, Morocco has invested heavily in efficient irrigation systems, greenhouse production, advanced pruning techniques, and international quality certifications. This has improved the quality and shelf life of the product.

The Moroccan government, through the Green Morocco Plan and the more recent Generation Green 2020-2030, has encouraged investment in high-value crops, such as blueberries. Spanish, French, and American companies have established plantations in the region.

Likewise, the Asian market, especially China, South Korea, and Japan, represents the next strategic target, given its growing demand for antioxidant-rich "superfruits," such as blueberries.

Morocco has become an emerging power in the blueberry market thanks to a modern agricultural model based on efficiency, quality, and a well-defined export strategy. If it maintains this trajectory, the Kingdom will consolidate its position as a key global supplier, particularly in Europe, the Middle East, and soon, Asia.
