Water quality is the most limiting factor to produce blueberries

Under conditions in Peru, the factor that most limits blueberry production projects is water quality, said Terra Business general manager Federico Beltrán Molina.
He indicated that the quality of water is related to the conductivity and the level of bicarbonates presented by it. "It is a common limitation that other countries in the world have had".
He stressed that there are ways to solve this problem and develop an adequate production. If it is a chemical factor, that is to say that it has to do with conductivity and pH, it is solved in a technical way and if it is a physical aspect it is solved with reverse osmosis.
In that sense, he said that the ideal is that the conductivity is below 1 and the pH below 6.5. "If some of that is not in place, you have to modify it" In this regard, he pointed out that in order to solve it, soil washing is done using amendments or using chemical modifications.
He also stated that if the conductivity is above 2.5 and especially if the sodium levels are very high, it will be essential to use osmosis, which is a very expensive technology, but which must be done to make the project viable.
