Canada secures blueberry offer to China
The Ministers of Agriculture and International Trade of Canada announced that their country and China agreed to maintain access for fresh blueberries from British Columbia to the Asian country.
Chinese inspectors are expected to visit Canada during the Northern Hemisphere summer - probably in July - when they will carry out a pre-shipment inspection and authorize the first shipment of blueberries to China.
The Canadian industry has estimated that once in full execution, access to this important market will contribute CAD $ 65 million (US $ 52.5 million) annually to the sector.
"This is great news for the world-class blueberries of British Columbia", Said Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade of Canada in a press release.
For its part, Debbie Etsell, executive director of BC Blueberry Council stressed that the announcement "comes at a time when the demand for fresh Canadian blueberries in China is very high due to the health benefits and the quality of our product".
Since the 20 in June, some 800 producers in the region are harvesting the fruit. According to the BC Blueberry Council, this year's harvest is expected to be on par with 2014 production that had yields close to 68 million kilograms.
