Cherries, a successful season that will be analyzed at the meeting this April 11 at Monticello

The surprising results of the season, the response of the crop to the impact of the climate, the quality of the new genetics and the reasons for the good prices achieved, will be analyzed at the International Berries & Cherries Seminar on April 11 in Monticello.

The fact that the producers of cherries are satisfied and satisfied for having achieved very good returns due to their good products and better prices, it is a scenario that was very difficult, or almost impossible, to imagine in November, when the intense rains hit the cherry crops beginning their ripening, then of enduring an especially cold spring that affected flowering and fruit set.

The climate challenge

The early fruit was the most affected, especially the Down, Royal and Santina varieties, and in this scenario a significant drop in yields and fruit quality was expected, which was practically not noticed, in fact, it is being closed. a 2023-2024 season that is fully successful in volumes, fruit quality and economic returns, enjoying prices that have been above the indices of previous years.

According to figures from the Chilean Fruit Cherry Committee, the season closed with exported volumes of 413.979 tons, which means a drop compared to the previous campaign of only 0,3%.

Good returns

The prices achieved were above those achieved in previous campaigns, mainly due to the initial delay in the arrival of the fruit to the Chinese market and then due to the good quality of the fruit arrived, which is essential and highly valued in that market.

In addition, some analysts highlight the stability in the behavior of wholesale prices in the Chinese market, since in the weeks prior to the Chinese New Year prices remained at a figure close to USD 45 per 5 kg box. And during the four weeks after the holiday, cherry prices remained close to USD 40 per box. It should be noted that during the four weeks prior to the Chinese New Year, more than 70% of Chilean cherries arrived in China.

Specialist analysis

As preliminary conclusions, it is estimated that the order of arrivals and excellent management in the markets could explain this success, although the majority also highlights that the good quality of the fruit sent is another reason for the good returns.

These surprising results of the season, the response of the crop to the impact of the climate, the quality of the new genetics and the reasons for the good prices achieved, will be analyzed in the International Berries & Cherries Seminar which this April 11 will be held at the Monticello Conference Center.
