Agave and berries will be certified in Michoacán
Michoacán has currently made it a priority to certify the cultivation of various products in which it is a pioneer for export in order to protect the State's environment. Such is the case of the certification of avocado orchards that is already official and the upcoming certification of agave and berries that is underway.
Alejandro Mendez, Secretary of the Environment, said that in the coming days a project will be presented to certify the packaging of berries produced in Michoacán, as a first step to give a distinctive mark to export products free of deforestation.
This is because there are already companies that have indicated that they will not accept products that come from orchards that have been deforested. In the case of agave, the governor has already signed a decree and an agreement with the Tequila Regulatory Council so that starting in 2027, which is when tequila production will begin with the current plantation, no agave that was planted by deforestation will be used.
Alejandro Mendez: «No agave that was planted in a deforested area will end up being used as tequila. Maybe something else can be done with that agave, but not anymore. That will also stop the deforestation in the thorn forest that has been deforested for tequila agave. We are also about to join a certification for mezcal agave.»
Of the 21 states that produce berries, the production volume is covered 96.8% by Michoacán, Jalisco, Baja California and Guanajuato, contributing 97.3% of the production value.
65% of the production volume is channeled to the foreign market: the countries that demand Mexican berries are the United States, Chile, Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands.
Berries are commonly known as fruits that are juicy, rounded, brightly colored, sweet or sour and pitted, although they may contain seeds. Biologically, a berry is the fruit generated from the ovary of a single flower in which the outer layer of the ovary wall becomes the edible fleshy portion.
