Chad Finn left with the sun ...

Unfortunately this is a different note. Here there are no numbers, values, or statistics. They are not news of the local or international blueberry industry, but we will talk about a renowned researcher who has gone to the sun.

In these lines there is sadness, reflection and recognition, because Chad Finn, a great scientist and geneticist recognized worldwide, has left us and it is very difficult for Blueberries Consulting and those who knew him, to find the right words to express the deep pain caused by the news .

Chad was very close to the world of Chilean and Latin American scientific research in general. He was a speaker at the International Blueberry Seminar held in Spain in 2018, exposing about genetic improvement in blueberries, and was preparing to collaborate in the next International Blueberry Seminar to be held in Lima, Peru, in May 2020.

Marcela Zúñiga, executive director of SunnyRidge Nurseries, who met him 25 years ago in the world of genetics and nursery, remembers him as a worldwide authority on berry genetics, consulted by scientists of different nationalities and a vital contribution to the development of The international blueberry industry.

Our renowned researcher, Jorge Retamales, who in addition to a colleague in the world of scientific research joined him a friendship with Chad Finn, has written a tribute note to Chad that we will publish in the next edition of the Blue Magazine, but that We advance some lines:

“Our friendship was forged during a trip to southern Chile to collect Chilean wild strawberry that we did about 15 years agoyou. By mMore than a week with Peter Caligari (breeder and professor at the U. of Talca) we traveled from the Maule region to Chiloé. We live together for many hours knowing the plants and people. There I could aquilatar and check its great academic and human quality. His great passion and knowledge of plants. His desire to live and improve the lives of others. ”

We add to his last wishes expressed to his family, to which he requested that we all have a celebration of mass life, with lots of food, drink, dance and storytelling in his memory.

That was Chad ... that's Chad, because as long as we remember it, it will always be present among us.

His family tells us that he left in peace and without pain, listening to "What does the fox say" (surely laughing and joking with his family) and enjoying his favorite song, "Here comes the sun" (The Beatles), surrounded by his loved ones, who accompanied him crying, laughing, joking, dancing and telling stories from Chad.

We are sad, but we join the feeling and spirit of his family, which communicates to us:

“We will let you know when we have discovered a time and place for a party to celebrate the best husband, father, father-in-law, brother, brotheradored tI and friend we know. Chad Finn lived bigger than life, let's celebrate in the same way… ”

And if they can, we also honor the desire of one of their children, who asks us to raise a glass of wine or a gin and tonic for his dad tonight, "Then gather your loved ones for a bear hug (try not to break anyone's rib like Dad once did)."

Until always Chad Finn, your height stamp, explaining your research to the attendees in different corners of the world, will be an indelible image.

You left with the sun, and everything is fine ... smiles return to their faces, as in your song.
