Chile: Blueberry exports maintain a deficit of 12% compared to the previous season

The absence of extreme high temperatures in all the producing areas of Chile, has ensured a development without interruption and without stress of the berries and this is noticeable in the shipments of the last 6 weeks. Starting in week 49, shipments have been between 7.000 and 9.000 tons, the only week of lower volume was the last of the year (53) with 6.223 tons.
With this, the volumes accumulated to the 1 week reach 46.022 tons, an 12% less than the previous season. This difference marks a new reduction in the comparison with the exports of the 2014-15 season.
The distribution by market continues to be similar to what was observed in previous weeks, where the US stands out receiving 66% of the total exported to date. We once again mention that having resumed the usual weekly export volumes from Chile, also implies that arrivals to each market have resumed and with it the great activity generated by blueberries at the retail level.
Expectations for the next 4 weeks, period in which high export volumes will remain, are positive from the climatic point of view and volumes are expected above the 7.000 weekly tons.
The latest update on the effect of the El Niño phenomenon has reduced the temperature anomaly in the Pacific Ocean to Chile to a minimum and has concentrated in the tropical zone. This means that the usual temperature regime for the summer period is resumed and the only manifestation of the El Niño phenomenon would be cloudiness and high relative humidity, which are favorable for the development of the fruits.
