Chile: "Blueberry production will lead the market"

During the seminar "Perspectives of the world season of berries 2016-2017" at the PMA Fruittrade fair in Chile, it was noted that the demand for berries continues to increase over the years, but selectively. Felipe Rosas, of Bconsulting Group, exhibitor of this seminar, stated: "While blueberries are becoming more and more technical, for example, raspberries have been displaced by small farmers. Cranberries have a growth of 19% and in the case of raspberries we only produce 4 tons per hectare, which is the lowest production worldwide".

"In the case of strawberries, the price is very high, given that local production in the United States has decreased, so there is a good market window. It is a good time to implement strawberries production technologies in Chile, starting with something basic like the implementation of crop protection"Added the representative.

In the seminar it was confirmed that, in the case of blueberries, there has been a world production of 720.000 tons. Chile exported in the previous season, 2014-2015, 110.000 tons. Finally, the 2016 year will be closed with an average of one 30% less volume in frozen than last year, although in the case of organic frozen products it would be an increase. Also, Argentina started earlier than normal, so it will end sooner, and the same situation is experienced in Peru, so that Chile will stay only for a period of 4 weeks, which gives it an advantage.
