Chile will receive a US $ 63,3 million fund to mitigate climate change

This Wednesday, the National Forestry Corporation (Conaf) announced that Chile will receive US $ 63,6 million by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) following the decision taken at the 24 ° meeting of the Green Climate Fund held in Songdo, South Korea, to mitigate the effects of climate change .

According to the CEO of Conaf, José Manuel Rebolledo, the money was delivered based on the results obtained between 2014 and 2016, with the emission reduction in Chile it reached 12,7 millions of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2eq).

In this way, the manager said, it will be possible implement the National Strategy for Climate Change and Plant Resources (ENCCRV), with actions of afforestation, restoration, sustainable management and preventive forestry, which would result in the increase of forest area by more than 25 thousand hectares.

The above, will benefit “about 57 thousand people, which will contribute to the reduction of the environmental, social and economic vulnerability generated by climate change ”in the regions of Maule, Ñuble, Bío Bío, La Araucanía, Los Ríos and Los Lagos, said Conaf in a statement.

“The project will help generate a new model of sustainable management of native forests in Chile, since these activities are framed in the implementation of the ENCCRV, aligned with the commitments acquired under the Paris Agreement and the National Determined Contribution (NDC) proposed by Chile, ”they added.

From Conaf they valued the award of the fund and stressed that the project to be substantiated with that budget "represents the opportunity to implement a new model of sustainable management of native forests."

In his opinion, this initiative “corresponds to a sustainable and integrative management model, focused on afforestation and restoration of the native forest, fire prevention and dendroenergy actions; in addition to capacity building actions and improvements in the audit, with the aim of improving the conditions of vulnerable communities ”.
