China wide commercial influence with the US
During the month of September 2021, 20% of total imports of goods and services made by the United States came from China, and only 12,5% came from Mexico and Canada. This has been the biggest difference between China and the members of the T-MEC since the beginning of the year. Over the months, China has been displacing North American countries as its trading partner.
Despite the fact that it has lost market share in the United States, this has not prevented it from presenting an increasing dominance against the countries closest to the power.
From January to July 2021, China's exports increased by 35,2%, reaching the sum of 1,8 trillion dollars. This according to customs data of that country. On the other hand, the United States presented exports of 994.000 million dollars during the same period, which represents an advance of 23,6%.
Comparing the previous data with the same time period, but from the year 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic, Chinese exports increased by 29,3% and US sales increased by 2,5%
It should be remembered that China and the United States continue to be in a trade war with each other, and they are, respectively, the first and second countries that export the most to the world. Taking as a reference the projection that UNCTAD made saying that world trade will grow by 19% in 2021, it would help China to gain more market share in the year.
Last year, in 2020, China accounted for 15,1% of total exports in the world, which is a record figure, it is 2,1 points more than in 2017, just one year before its trade war with the United States began. However, the participation of the United States was in decline, going from 8,9% in 2017 to 8,4% in 2020.
To these situations we must also add that the United States is presenting legal problems with China that have even led it to appear before the panel of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
However, the United States appealed the report to the WTO report and the Appellate Body cannot hear their appeals, therefore it is quite likely that this dispute will not be resolved using the WTO dispute settlement framework. .
