China inaugurates a new direct maritime route to import Chilean cherries to the northern part of the Asian giant

A reduction of 50 to 70 percent is expected in the general price of the fruit, very popular in that country.

The port of the northern Chinese city of Tianjin this week inaugurated a new direct sea route to import cherries from Chile, state media reported. The ship that opened the inaugural route was carrying more than 2.000 tons of fresh cherries, which arrived at the Chinese port on January 16, the Xinhua news agency reported today.

This is the first time that a direct shipping service for Latin American cherries has been offered to the northern Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. «More than 1.840 tons of imported cherries were sold in the pre-sale».

Said Wei Shujian, president of Hebei Sunhola Group, a fruit importing company. Previously, cherries destined for northern China were mainly transported by road from southern ports or by air services, resulting in high logistics costs. "With this new route we expect a reduction of 50 to 70 percent in the general price of cherries."

Said Pagoda, a fruit retail company. Chilean cherries are a popular product in China, and demand is growing, especially during the Chinese New Year, which will begin next February, and during the spring. According to the online sales portal Tmall, its sales of Chilean cherries in November 2023 grew by 960% compared to the same period of the previous year.
