With two days dedicated to postharvest, the successful International Blueberry Month 2021 continues

“Firmness is a characteristic that is built in the garden. Fertilizations, irrigation, vigor management are very important. There is a varietal characteristic, no doubt, but the firmness is lost for different things. Finally, firmness is built in the garden "

Every day there is a need for research and knowledge about the behavior of the blueberry in the postharvest stage, due to the fact that the consumer and market standards, and competition forces the different industries of the countries to seek farther and farther destinations for your fruit.

First working day

This July 10, from 10am, Chile time, an extensive day will begin with the aim of addressing most of the aspects that affect the fruit quality until its arrival to the final consumer. The postharvest technologies used at present, the frequency of the harvest, the firmness of the fruit, the dehydration factors, and the quality parameters in the reception of the blueberry in the destination markets, will be some of the aspects that will be addressed by the renowned researchers Claudia Moggia, Jessica Rodriguez and the teacher Bruno Defilipi.

Second day

The subject will continue to be treated in depth on Thursday, 12, at the same time, addressing the firmness of the fruit in different varieties of blueberries, the keys to success in meeting the postharvest challenges in the industry, the handling of the harvest of high quality blueberries, and a look at innovative postharvest technologies to preserve the quality and condition of the blueberry. Topics that will be treated by the specialist Paula of the Valley, the researcher and academic Reinaldo Campos, and experts in postharvest technologies, Marcela Silva and Cecilia Granger.

The secret is in the handling

“Firmness is a characteristic that is built in the garden. Fertilizations, irrigation, vigor management are very important. Firmness is built. There is a varietal characteristic, without a doubt. There are firmer varieties, in fact, we are currently in a conversion to firmer varieties than the ones we had traditionally, but the firmness is lost, it is lost for different things. It is lost because I did not manage it properly in the garden, it is lost because I can dehydrate it and when I dehydrate I will lose firmness. And it is lost in ripening, because when the fruit overripe it will also lose firmness. In general, the handling, the handling that we do in postharvest, has a lot to do with it. Finally, firmness is built in the garden ”, he assures Jessica Rodriguez, which in addition to researcher and expert, has the experience of knowing very well the behavior and parameters of the reception of the fruit in different destinations, mainly in the Asian market.
