Cort Brazelton and Miguel Bentín announce what is coming in the blueberry industry

"Privileged positions in the markets are ancient history and will no longer exist ..."

Uncertainty is the word that surrounds not only the blueberry industry, but also all the productive or commercial activities of the world. All economies are in expectant moments regarding the future and nothing is assured.

Within the framework of International Blueberry Month, Cort Brazelton and Miguel Bentín gave talks on the perspective of analyzing the industry and establishing the main future prospects, in such a way as to set trends to set the course and make decisions about what to do.

For Brazelton, there are certain signs to sustain that the demand for blueberry consumption will not only be maintained, but will increase in the future, consolidating a trend that had already manifested itself before the pandemic.

Paradigm shift

In January of this year, Brazelton published an article stating that 2020 would be a turning point for the blueberry industry, and this time he takes charge of analyzing this prediction.

"Indeed we are in a new normal with respect to the consumption of blueberries, adding what causes the pandemic"

“Consistency is the quality that people demand from fruit. There are more blueberries and therefore higher quality is required "

"It must evolve from a commodity offer to a value creation offer"

"We are entering a quality phase and leaving a supply phase"

"We were 20 years riding on the good horse of the healthy qualities of the fruit, but that phase is over and we must add value"

More demand and new habits

Brazelton says there has been no drop in blueberry consumption after the July 4 holiday, when the trend was down. The consumption of blueberries has been maintained. Remember that, at the beginning of the pandemic, when there was a panic purchase and people went out of their way to buy tons of toilet paper for the bathroom and there were not many merchandise, the world trend was to freeze products, and among those blueberries were one of the chosen ones. Then, as we enter the adaptation stage, which we are in now, this trend continues and people continue to buy fresh blueberries to eat and freeze. The explanation would be that new habits are being created. "This phenomenon should be studied," she stresses.

"We have great evidence that the level of consumption can increase in the markets", which is why it calls for thinking very positively about the future.

"One million tons of blueberries are consumed in the world and I believe that our volumes are going to double by 2030, so we have to think about how we should take advantage of this opportunity."

Bentín and the great announcement of the Peruvian offer

In this perspective, Miguel Bentín announces that the Peruvian supply projections for 2021 are to produce more than 171.000 tons of blueberries, which would mean an approximate growth of 42% compared to last season. Focusing mainly on exporting to the United States market, with more than 50% of shipments.

Bentín analyzes the opportunities of the Peruvian industry, based on the fact that "the privileged positions in the markets are ancient history and will no longer exist", therefore "the longer you can be present in the market, with good quality and It constantly makes you more valuable as a supplier in terms of reliability ”so“ it is an advantage that, if possible, Peru will take advantage of ”.

A longer season

In this perspective, he explains that the Peruvian productive units are very large in size. "A productive unit of 1000 hectares or more is very easy to find in Peru today", so the physical capacities to harvest that this reality demands require that "the longer the seasons, the more efficient and safe production will be. quality ”, adding to this the restrictions related to the presence of people and their sanitary safeguards, which reinforces the need to extend the season.
