Costa Group launches BluGenix and projects its blueberry improvement program globally
Costa Group began a new stage in the development of its blueberry genetic improvement program with the launch of BluGenix, a brand with which it seeks to project globally a line of work built on almost four decades of experience in plant breeding.
The program, which has been a central part of the company's operations, will continue to focus on developing blueberry varieties with an emphasis on quality, flavor, and productive adaptation.
Based in Australia, BluGenix develops varieties adapted to a wide range of climates, from low-latitude areas with no chill accumulation to regions with moderate and cold temperatures. According to the company, each variety is developed specifically for its growing environment, with the goal of supporting both field performance and final fruit quality.
In addition to climate adaptation, the program also focuses on variables such as pest resistance, water efficiency, productivity, and labor efficiency in harvesting.
A new phase for the program
Costa Group CEO Marc Werner noted that the launch of BluGenix represents a new stage for the improvement program.
“Our blueberry varieties are recognized worldwide, and our investment in the future of BluGenix will ensure that we continue to expand our varietal offering,” Werner stated.
The executive added that the program has a long history and the support of internationally renowned specialists who have been part of its development.
Genetic basis, testing network and international projection
According to Costa, the program is supported by a broad base of germplasm and genetic material in Australia, as well as technical expertise in breeding and the support of the berry operations that the company maintains both in that country and in international markets.
The company also indicated that its network of fields in different producing regions allows for on-site evaluations and progress in the development of varieties adapted to different climates and latitudes.
Currently, the program evaluates more than 25.000 seedlings and more than 500 selections each year.
Varieties geared towards different production profiles
Leon Van Biljon, regional director of Costa Berry International, explained that the varieties developed under BluGenix seek to meet different production requirements.
“With our extensive network of fields and the experience we continue to accumulate, we know what works,” said Van Biljon. “As BluGenix continues to expand globally, we expect to offer premium varieties that meet the needs of growers, retailers, and consumers.”
