Global Coalition of Fresh Produce Trade Associations created to address cost increases impacting the industry

Fresh produce associations around the world have formed an international coalition to address the rising costs of producing and trading fresh produce, which has raised significant concerns about the economic viability of the sector and its ability to cope with new sustainability requirements.

Fresh produce associations including Afruibana (West Africa), I/E of Foods Stuffs China Chamber of Commerce, Native Produce and Animal By-Products (China), ColeACP (African, Caribbean and Pacific Countries), Copa and Cogeca (European Union), Canadian Produce Marketing Association – CPMA (Canada), International Fresh Produce Association – IFPA (USA), Freshfel Europe (European Union) and the Association of Exporters of Fresh Fruits of the Southern Hemisphere – SHAFFE ( Latin America, Oceania, and South Africa) have agreed to form a global coalition to tackle the rising costs of producing and trading fresh produce.

This global coalition will proactively raise global industry concerns about increasing supply chain disruptions and propose common solutions.

The group has identified a number of key challenges that all fruit and vegetable operators around the world are currently facing. Concerns include higher logistics, input, fertilizer, packaging material and energy costs, as well as supply chain delays and a general shortage of worker availability. In addition, to all these aspects, the complications derived from the continuous effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on supply chains are added.

As such, the Coalition will collaborate to raise concerns publicly and work to establish multi-stakeholder dialogues with key supply chain and policy makers, including shipping and retail. The group will also seek to raise consumer awareness on this issue, while promoting the importance and value of fresh produce given its contribution to public health and a plant-based diet.

Through the combined efforts of these major international business entities, the Coalition hopes that fruits and vegetables will be recognized as an essential public good, supporting initiatives that promote a sustainable, affordable and economically viable fresh produce sector.
