Cuba grows its first blueberries

As a result of international collaboration, this western province today validates the first areas dedicated in Cuba to the cultivation of cranberry, a species that is successfully introduced to the fruit of the world.

More than 720 seedlings from Chile are part of the experiment in the agroindustrial company Enrique Troncoso, from Pinar del Río, whose soils are characterized by being acidic and sandy, as this crop variety demands.

The crop occupies 0,2 hectares and responds to the technical standards existing in other countries, with remarkable results in the production of this type of berries.

Joel Calzadilla, director of the entity, explains that the validation phase will make it possible to specify the intentions of producing them on a large scale in the province where other species, including citrus fruits, are also encouraged.

Its consumption grows internationally and its main producers are the United States, Canada and Chile. In the forests of North America and other cold regions it grows in a wild way, although it is also cultivated.
