Frost damage: Italy, France and Greece write to the EU

Letter to the Commission requesting urgent support measures for the companies affected.

Support initiatives for the agricultural sector

Targeted interventions for frost waves that, in the months of March and April, affected a large part of the national territory and several European countries, causing damage to the agricultural sector, particularly the fruit and vegetable sector and the wine sector. This is what Italy, France and Greece shared and signed in a letter sent to the European Commission in recent days, requesting the implementation of the appropriate measures of urgent and transitory aid to support the affected companies, in accordance with the provided in article 221 of the Regulation on the unique organization of the market.

Climate changes

The agricultural sector, which has already had serious repercussions from the pandemic, has continued to produce safe and quality food for European citizens. Unfortunately, the Agriculture is strongly affected by the ongoing climate changes and the frosts that have affected production in recent weeks are an example of this. .

Common Agricultural Policy of the European Union

The joint letter also highlighted the importance of the proposal, strongly supported by Italy, to allocate an adequate part of the CAP direct payments to the creation of a safety net for all companies in the sector, in support of the current risk management tools.

Tools and technology

“The frequency with which these extreme events occur requires the operation of tools capable of rapid intervention: only an integrated approach between risk management tools and support for more specific investments to reduce the risks themselves can contribute to improving the resilience of agricultural companies”, reads the Mipaaf note.

This initiative is part of the measures promoted by the government to support a strategic sector of the economy such as agriculture for which, finally, the Ministry has provided, in Dl Sostegni bis, an endowment of 105 million in favor of the National Solidarity Fund”. Precisely "in order to restore the damage to the production, structures and production plants of the companies affected by the frosts and frosts of April 2021".
