They detected the presence of three plague eradicated from Chile in the Tarapacá region

The Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG) of Chile this week filed three complaints with the Public Ministry of the Tarapacá Region for the alleged crime of spreading plant pests.

César Cardozo, regional director of SAG Tarapacá, explained that the measure was taken following the guidelines established in the Criminal Code, and that the complaint was filed with the Public Ministry of that area of the country.

The official assured that they carried out the procedure after finding three quarantine plagues absent in the country. He presumed that the threats were entered illegally through products introduced into Chilean soil through unlicensed border crossings.

Cardozo explained that the pathogens detected are the fruit fly (Ceratitis capitata y Anastrepha sp.), the tropical gray scale (Parliamentary cinerea hadden y Senaspidus sp.) and the weevils of the Andes (Rhigopsidius sp.)

The pests were detected in areas such as mangoes, some types of citrus and potatoes. It is known that the entry of these foods was illegal, but has not specified the origin of these or if they managed to spread through the area.

"As SAG, we are filing these complaints against at least seven people already identified and all those responsible for this real attack on the phytosanitary and zoosanitary patrimony of Chile, since through laboratory analysis we have been able to determine that three types of pests of economic importance for our country were present in products illegally interned in our region, "said Cardozo.

The Fruit Fly affects more than 250 species of fruit and vegetables, while the Tropical Gray Scale has citrus as the main host and the Weevil of the Andes affects the cultivation of potatoes in the Andean area.
