USA US: North Carolina awaits another historic season for blueberries

The blueberry crop of North Carolina could have another historic year thanks to the dry weather conditions they have had.

«Too much rain during harvest can damage blueberries and spoil a crop"explains Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler in a press release. «Fortunately, time is cooperating and we are observing some of the highest productivity and the tastiest berries we have had in years«.

The production of 22 million kilos of blueberries that North Carolina had last year was a record for the state, according to Brian Long, spokesman for the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services of North Carolina. This harvest turned the state into the seventh in production of cultivated blueberries, according to the country's Department of Agriculture. Washington ranked first at 2014, followed by Georgia, Michigan, Oregon, New Jersey and California.

Maine is the main producer of wild blueberries.

Around 75 percent of the North Carolina crop is sold to food stores, producer markets and roadside stands.
