The US encourages American investment in Morocco's southern provinces.
The United States has taken concrete steps to translate its recognition of Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara through economic cooperation initiatives.
In a significant statement, US Deputy Secretary of State, Christopher Landau, announced that his country is working to increase investment in Morocco's southern provinces, aligning itself with Washington's recognition.
Landau made these statements after a meeting with the Moroccan Foreign Minister, Nasser Bourita, in New York, on the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly on Wednesday.
Landau confirmed that the decision aligns with the Trump administration's global efforts to promote diplomacy through economic and trade initiatives.
"The United States has recognized Morocco's sovereignty over the Sahara, as part of the Trump administration's global initiatives to promote economic and commercial diplomacy," the US diplomat told reporters.
He also expressed his country's satisfaction at announcing that we will encourage American companies to invest in this region of Morocco.
During the meeting with Bourita, both sides discussed the excellent and long-standing relationship between Morocco and the United States.
Landau emphasized the U.S. administration's willingness to work with Morocco to "promote prosperity, peace, and stability in the region."
This announcement represents a new boost to the already excellent relations between the United States and Morocco, particularly regarding the disputed territory of Western Sahara.
The United States recognized Morocco's sovereignty over Western Sahara in December 2020, a pivotal move that changed the way the international community views the dispute.
Since then, Rabat's stance on the Sahara has continued to garner international support for its true legitimacy over its southern provinces.
The US decision remains a cornerstone of US policy in the region, as evidenced by members of the US Congress who have repeatedly reiterated their country's support for Morocco's position.
