USA UU (New Jersey): Cranberry harvest will start mid-month
The blueberry harvest is expected to begin around the middle of this month in New Jersey. If in other regions the harvest begins sooner, competition could increase, but this is not expected to significantly affect the state's producers.
"Normally we do not have too much competition, but this year it seems that British Columbia will start soon and it also seems that they will soon end in Oregon and Washington"Explains Bob Von Rohr, of the Fruit Cooperative Association of Jersey. "Normally we enter the game early" But even with the added competition, Von Rohr thinks that most of the early fruit from other regions will stay on the west coast and, therefore, will not put much pressure on New Jersey fruit.
"We are very close to New York, Boston, Philadelphia and Washington DC, and that is an advantage"Explains Von Rohr. This year, the harvest will probably benefit from many cold hours and, in the absence of bad weather, Von Rohr predicts that this year's crop will be plentiful. "At the moment I am very optimistic"He says. "As long as Mother Nature cooperates, we will have a full harvest and a normal start".
