The blueberry boom: the fruit that brings together science and the company
The Center for Postharvest Studies of the University of Chile and the Committee of Cranberries of Chile held a day of knowledge transfer that will allow producers to improve the conservation of the successful export product.
The Transfer Conference on Postharvest and Cooling of Cranberry Fruits was organized by the Center for Post-Harvest Studies (CEPOC) of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences of the University of Chile and the Committee of Cranberries of Chile, which brings together 42 companies.
«The research transfer instances are very important because they are very close to the industry's need, it is important that the universities land their knowledge and work very closely with the industry according to the specific needs«said Francisca Barros, Deputy Manager of Quality and Postharvest of the Agricultural and Fruit Cooperative of Curicó Ltda. COPEFRUT.
The event was attended by 30 blueberry producers, whose objective was to provide knowledge about the outstanding experience in this area of New Zealand, as well as knowledge, techniques and procedures emanating from applied research implemented by CEPOC.
The presentations were given by Dr. Andrew East, Massey Institute of Food Science and Technology, Massey University, New Zealand, Mrs. Julia Pinto, representative of the Committee of Cranberries, and Professor and Director of CEPOC, Dr. Víctor Hugo Escalona.
«Massey University of New Zealand is one of the seven universities in that country and one of the few that works on agricultural issues. New Zealand is very important from the point of view of exports and for us it is a very strong competitor that has a lot of quality and often has better prices in the market. Therefore, it is a good opportunity to have the specialists to talk about postharvest«, indicated Dr. Víctor Hugo Escalona.
