The megaproject that will turn Peru into the green giant of Latin America: it will change more than 111.000 hectares of arid lands into fertile ones

In April, the Government signed a State-to-State contract with Canada for the technical assistance service of the third stage of Chavimochic, a project that will turn Peru into the green giant of Latin America and that will convert more than 111.000 hectares from arid coasts to fertile lands for export.

Agriculture has always been present in the lives of all people. Globally, it generates 4% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). In it Peru, agricultural exports increased from US$645 million in 2000 to US$10.500 billion in 2023. The megaproject that will return Peru to the green giant of Latin America. During the agreement ceremony, which took place on April 30 in government palace, the minister of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI), Ángel Manero Campos, highlighted:

 “After 8 years, this project was unblocked” and, when combined with stages I and II, it will cover 180.000 hectares, becoming one of the largest plans in the world.

Chavimochic It not only irrigates the valleys of La Libertad, but also provides drinking water to 50% of the population of Trujillo. Stages I and II have caused Peru's production and exports to skyrocket, mainly asparagus, avocados, grapes, vegetables and blueberries.

The world-class irrigation plan, which will benefit the national agricultural sector and will boost the economy of the north of the country, it will continue its progress in the department of La Libertad, where the first two phases have already been advanced.

The third stage will make the difference and put the project Chavimochic, whose name refers to the acronyms of the four valleys that will be crossed by the mother canal (Chao, Virú, Moche and Chama), at the level of the Chancay megaport. The plan has been key to improving agricultural productivity, converting dry and unproductive land into fertile land thanks to efficient irrigation infrastructure.

This phase seeks to increase the arable surface through the irrigation of 63.000 new hectares, improve the water supply for another 48.000 hectares already in use and give a new lease of life to the agricultural economy. Are 111.000 hectares that will be used for agricultural exports with an investment of more than US $ 750 million.

What consequences will Chavimochic III bring?

Chavimochic III will promote the creation of 150.000 jobs for the sector and will increase agricultural exports, as well as the access of more products to the main international markets, with which it is expected to exceed annual sales of more than US$10.000 million, which will make the country one of the main producers of grapes, avocados and blueberries in the world.

As for blueberries, the Peru In less than 10 years it has surpassed the United States and Chile as the main exporter in the world, with La Libertad being the region with the largest production area (46%). As indicated by the head of the MIDAGRI, the works begin this year and will finish at the end of 2027.

What will be the accesses that Chavimochic will have?

Access to the Chavimochic areas is through:

  • North Pan-American Highway, which crosses the entire area.
  • Airport “CAP FAP Carlos Martínez de Pinillos, located 15 km northeast of the city of Trujillo.
  • Salaverry Port, located between 5 and 10 km from the Project lands.
