The value of blueberry exports from Peru increases by 10% until September

The value of blueberry exports from Peru increased by 10% year-on-year until September, according to the Agro-Export Management of the Association of Exporters (ADEX).

During the nine-month period, the value of Peruvian blueberry exports increased from $ 350 million to $ 387 million.

The news follows preseason estimates that the 2020-21 Peruvian blueberry season will see volumes increase by 40% to around 165,000 metric tons (MT). If achieved, Peru would consolidate its position as the world's leading blueberry exporter.

Fresh blueberries accounted for 97% of exports, and frozen blueberries accounted for almost all the rest.

In September, the month in which the Peruvian blueberry season begins, blueberries were exported to a total of 44 destinations. The highest concentration of blueberries, 50,2%, was shipped to the United States, generating just over $ 194,5 million.

The second largest recipient of exports was the Netherlands with a 25,4% share.

Exports to China fell 12%, while those to the United Kingdom fell 10%, ADEX said. There were also shipments to Hong Kong, Germany, Canada, Spain, Poland and Belgium.

Adex noted that Peru was able to make its first shipment of blueberries to Taiwan in October after gaining access to the country in March. The first shipment was sent at the beginning of the month from the port of Paita (Piura) bound for the port of Keelung.

Exports in 2020-21 to Europe are expected to increase by 50% and to the US by 25%.
