Spain: 75% of supermarket purchases are for fresh products

For many consumers, going to the supermarket means not only going to buy food, but also a way to socialize and see other people. After a year of pandemic, according to the report by The Retail Factory, 70% of Spaniards affirm that what they miss the most are the stages and social gatherings. Among which consumption is the main activity.

Physical purchases in stores

Either as a result of the consequences of the pandemic or the trends that have been approaching in recent years due to the online modality, according to the study by The Retail Factory in Spain, about 29% of consumers have chosen to permanently abandon the physical purchases in a supermarket. While 48% prefer a mixed modality between physical and online.

The study "Understanding the New Post-Covid Shopper" affirms that between 45% and 46% of those surveyed prefer this route due to its speed and that they have already taken to the habit during these months of confinement.

However, among those who still choose to go to the stores, they have demonstrated strong demands for certain products over others. Among the favorite products are the acquisition of fresh food with 75%, dairy with 29%, frozen food with 20% and items related to personal hygiene are concentrated in 7%.

Priorities

This is due, above all, to the fact that 24% of post-Covid Spanish shoppers prioritize proximity, the wide variety of assortment and the length of time when choosing the purchase channel. Likewise, the existence of good offers and promotions is also important.

The need to relate to their peers was often satisfied in encounters with shopping in supermarkets and consumer stores such as restaurants or pubs. Faced with this, it is concentrated that 70% of Spaniards yearn to be able to go out and consume. Of them, 30% say that what they miss the most is going to restaurants and bars, 18% yearn to be able to see their friends or family at home, 16% would like to be able to sit down to eat somewhere open, 9% go out to party and 8% would like to do sports without having to wear a mask.

Non stop online consumption

The offer of products on online platforms is usually much more attractive in some cases. The ease of buying and receiving them at the door of the home without having to go out, saving traffic and conglomerates of people has been a very viable option for many people. However, this results in that people's spending has started to increase, which has caused 48% of the study participants to declare that they will reduce their spending on fashion and retail.
