Shipments to the United Kingdom during the first months of 2021 fall in volume but increase in value

Spanish exporters assess the early impact that Brexit would have on the region's fruit and vegetable figures.

Fruit and vegetable exports to the UK fell 7% in volume, but registered a 6% increase in January and February compared to the same period last year.

Consequences of Brexit

Customs data shows that in the first two months since the post-Brexit trade deal came into force, exports totaled 302.190 tonnes, worth € 427 million.

Negative costs

Fepex said the agreement had allowed exporters to avoid paying € 198 million in customs duties over the two months, but noted that administrative costs had increased due to the need for more documentation.

New protocols

From January 1, 2021, exporting companies must use customs declarations and certificates of compliance with marketing standards.
