Spain: Almería exceeds 26.000 hectares of crops that fight pests with biological control

The Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Sustainable Development, Carmen Crespo, visited the facilities of the company Agrobío in La Mojonera (Almería), "a great company that demonstrates once again that Almería's agriculture is not just fruit and vegetable products, but also innovation that brings sustainability to the sector, flavor to food and prevents pests”.

"Agrobío is an example of a commitment to permanent innovation, which is an important part of our agriculture that we must show to the whole world", pointed out Crespo, who highlighted that the staff of this entity has numerous "scientists who study how improve the agricultural sector and its products”.

During the tour, the minister was accompanied, among other people, by the managing director of Agrobío, José Antonio Santorromán, and the mayor of La Mojonera, José Miguel Hernández; With whom he has commented "the important bet of the professionals of the Andalusian field in general, and of Almeria in particular, for the sustainability of an activity that is fundamental for the economy of the Autonomous Community".

"Agriculture is compatible with respect for the environment," he stressed.

The province of Almería has nearly 13.000 hectares of crops where integrated production techniques are applied and, in the case of biological pest control, the area exceeds 26.000 hectares. Regarding organic production, it stands out that Almería is currently the Andalusian territory with the largest number of operators (about 4.900 professionals) and that this province has tripled the organic area under plastic in the last decade.

"It is necessary to continue innovating to find solutions to the current challenges of the agricultural sector" pointed out Carmen Crespo, who valued that Agrobío has been a pioneer in Spain in the production of pollinating bumblebees that offer farmers "the most respectful way" of boost the profitability of farms "letting nature take its course".

Agrobío is a benchmark at European level in the production of auxiliary fauna for pest control and its commitment to sustainability is also reflected in the search for zero waste and natural balance.
