Spain: Covid-19, Agriculture resists and is the activity that increased affiliates and lost the least employment in March

The agricultural sector stopped leading the increases in unemployment registered in recent months and was placed at the end of March as the one that least destroyed jobs, with an increase of 4,26% per month, to add 6.520 more unemployed, far from the strong increases, which were expected before the cessation of economic activity, due to the coronavirus health crisis.

Thus, according to data from the State Public Employment Service (SEPE), in Industry registered unemployment rose by 25.194 people (+ 9,15%); in Construction, 59.551 more unemployed (+ 22,92%) and in Services, which affected the broad commercial and tourism sector and the Hospitality and Catering channel, in another 206.016 people (+8,97%). The national total added 302.265 new jobseekers last March (2,16% from Agriculture), leaving the total of unemployed registered in the SEPE at 3.548.312 people, after the largest rise in monthly unemployment in history.

The rise in registered unemployment in Agriculture was much higher than that registered in the month of March 2019. Then, the number of registered unemployed increased by 1.722 people. Since 2009, only in that year (+7.684 more unemployed), in 2010 (+7.019) and in 2014 (+14.854), a greater number of agricultural unemployed had been registered. March is also a bridging month, because some harvests are ending, such as winter vegetables and olive mills, and, in part, citrus, before others start, especially those related to stone fruit.

By Autonomous Community, the 159.420 registered agricultural unemployed throughout Spain (almost 4,5% of the national total) are distributed among Andalusia, 68.941 unemployed (+4.152); Aragon, 3.800 (+170); Principality of Asturias, 1.395 (-30); Balearic Islands, 693 (+28); Canary Islands, 4.622 (+95); Cantabria, 686 (-20); Castilla-La Mancha, 15.252 (+694); Castilla y León, 8.272 (+153); Catalonia, 8.400 (+64); Valencian Community, 13.297 (+282); Extremadura, 11.755 (+521); Galicia, 5.950 (-79); Community of Madrid, 2.858 (+23); Murcia Region, 6.757 (-40); Comunidad Foral de Navarra, 2.112 (+117); Basque Country, 2.694 (+151); La Rioja, 1.795 (+238)); Ceuta, 75 (+3), and Melilla, 66 (-2).
