Spain: 28% of imported fruit and vegetables come from Morocco

Spain has increased its imports of fruits and vegetables from Morocco. According to data from the Spanish Customs Service, between January and August 2020, Spanish imports of fresh fruits and vegetables increased by 8% compared to the same period of the previous year, totaling 2.078 million euros, with Morocco as the main supplier.

Moroccan exports of agricultural products to Spain have resisted the Covid-19 pandemic . Indeed, 66% of the fruits and vegetables that our Iberian neighbor imports come from third countries with more than 1,3 million tons, with Morocco being the first supplier with 583 million euros, or 28% of the total value of Imports according to data from the Directorate of Customs and Special Taxes of Spain, processed by FEPEX.

Morocco has also experienced strong growth, with 18% which, during the period from January to August 2019, maintains the upward pace of recent years.

In total, imports of Spanish fruit amounted to 1.495 million euros, 15% more than in the same months of the previous year, the most imported products being avocado with 216 million euros (+ 12%), kiwi with 163,5, 24 million euros (+ XNUMX%) and blueberries with 132 million euros (+ 48%). In volume, fruit imports also increased 8%, totaling 1,2 million tons.

However, Spanish vegetable imports fell 5%, to 583 million euros, due to the 15% fall in potato imports, which totaled 174 million euros and represented 30% of the total. The second most imported vegetable is tomato with 101 million euros (+ 6%). In volume, the purchases of vegetables amounted to 967.132 tons, the same amount as in the previous period.
