Spain: Freshuelva indicates that the campaign is at 10% and expects to end with some 280.000 tons

In the province there is a total of 11.740 hectares planted with red fruits, of which 6.167 correspond to strawberries, 3.532 to blueberries, 2.070 to raspberries and 140 to blackberries.

The Huelva Association of Strawberry Producers and Exporters, Freshuelva, has indicated that the campaign for this fruit in the province is currently "over 10 percent" of the forecast volume, which it estimates will end with around 280.000 or 290.000 of production and marketing.

This has been indicated to Europa Press by its manager, Rafael Dominguez, who has pointed out that in the first part of the campaign with "the cold nights of December and January there has been little fruit", since he has highlighted that it "has been of good characteristics", for which reason it has shown "happy" because "it has reached the markets very well and has been quite well accepted".

With regard to prices at origin, he underlined that "they have been going down, as the volume of production has been rising", although "at specific and designated moments such as Valentine's Day, demand has risen" for which "there have been better prices", while remarking that "the evolution will have to be analyzed".

Likewise, Domínguez has pointed out that the markets "have behaved well" so far "without any abnormal situation", as well as remarked that there have been no problems “with the United Kingdom, neither administrative nor of any other nature", in a year "in which they are completely outside the European Union", so "there is nothing to suggest that there may be any reluctance regarding Huelva berries".

At this point, he has qualified that "the question is the quite important competition that there is with third countries" with which "it could have commercial agreements", so there is "greater competition". As for the rest of the red fruit crops, he has highlighted that currently they also continue to in campaign raspberry and blueberry, although the latter "in small quantities" as it is "an early variety" that "is becoming more and more established", for which reason "it is already being marketed in January and February, despite the fact that its campaign "usually begins at the end of March".

"It is already in the markets, although in tough competition with other countries that are in spring right now and have more tonnage such as Chile or Peru", he pointed out about the blueberry, while adding that the raspberry began to be harvested between October and November with "the one from the autumn campaign" and, although "now there is less volume", the production "will pick up again in the month of March". Specifically, this is 25 percent of the total volume of the campaign.

On the other hand, he explained "some varieties of blackberry, although in small quantities", as well as he has qualified that in the one with the least tonnage in the province, since "it is the one with the fewest hectares".

Specifically, Domínguez explained that in the province of Huelva there is a total of 11.740 hectares planted with red fruits, of which 6.167 correspond to the strawberry, 3.532 to the blueberry, 2.070 to the raspberry and 140 to the blackberry, "with which the second berry in the province is currently the blueberry, whose campaign is being extended from January to practically July, for the cultivation of new varieties.
