Spain: Gran Canaria will grow 600 red fruit plants

The Cabildo of Gran Canaria has indicated that 600 will cultivate blueberry, redcurrant, raspberry and blackberry plants to determine its viability on the island.

This was stated last Thursday by the insular councilor of Food Sovereignty, Miguel Hidalgo, who indicated that the objective of these plantations is to study their adaptation to the climate of Gran Canaria to "introduce red fruits into the local fruit and vegetable market and gain greater levels of food autonomy".

This action, he added, is part of a program of R & D & I projects for this 2016, which will be held at the Osorio de Teror farm and on a plot located in Las Lagunetas de San Mateo, in order to analyze the behavior of these four fruits in the climatological characteristics of both zones.

The Cabildo Farm will start to cultivate the 600 plants of the so-called forest fruits this same month of May. The benefits of these fruits for the cardiovascular system include the reduction of cholesterol and anti-aging through its antioxidant properties, which "they make them an attractive product for the consumer".

Regarding experimentation, he indicated that he will focus on water, to find the exact amount that this type of crop needs and avoid waste, as well as on fertilizer because the one that produces the best behavior must be found to get the "most out of it." to these "fast cycle" plants that produce all year round and need cold.

This work will be developed until 2018 although in 2017 «the first results can be obtained» about the viability of these crops "great projection" commercial and the opportunity to diversify the offer in Gran Canaria.

Finally, he pointed out that Gran Canaria lacks cultivators dedicated to this type of fruit although there is a small number of farmers who have tried to plant them, so he considered that the Cabildo's experimentation work "will contribute to improving practice".
