Expect up to 19% increase in blueberry production this season

During the 2015-16 season, the export volume of fresh Chilean blueberries would be between 99 thousand and 109 thousand tons, reported the Committee of Cranberries of Chile.

The above would mean a variation of between 7% and 19% with respect to the exported in the previous campaign, according to a report that was announced at the Annual Meeting of Members of the Chilean Committee.

Andrés Armstrong, executive director of the Committee of Cranberries of Chile commented that they expect a very good season, resuming the rhythm of production growth, which will allow to have an adequate supply and continue with the diversification of markets that has been observed in the last five years .

"As a sector we have understood that climatic events, increasingly present around the world, can affect our productive potential in an important way. That is why we are attentive to any situation that may modify our estimates and timely inform our markets "said Armstrong.

"Also, climatic variations can affect the quality and condition of our fruit", added the executive director.

According to the projection of the Committee -produced in conjunction with iQonsulting- the leading region in blueberry production will be the Maule Region. This would export a total of 36.283 tons, followed by the Bío Bío Region with 31.811 tons exported and the Araucanía Region, which has an export projection of 10.703 tons.

At the level of weekly departures, the first peak would be registered in the 49 and 50 weeks, when the shipments would reach 4 thousand and 6 thousand tons to the different destination markets.

During the last season Chile exported 134.507 tons. Of the total, one 69% was fresh blueberries, one 25% was frozen, 4% juice, 1.6% preserved and 0.4% dehydrated, according to Chilealimentos estimates reported by the Committee.
