Europe: The truck is reinforced as the main means of transport by moving 95,5% of fruit and vegetable exports

A total of 10,8 million tons of fresh fruits and vegetables were exported by truck in 2023, which represents 95,5% of the total sent abroad that year, which amounted to 11,3 million tons, reinforcing itself as main means of transportation used in the sector, since five years ago, in 2019, it represented 94%.
A long distance from the truck, the second means of transport used for the Spanish export of fresh fruits and vegetables is the ship, with 471.465 tons, representing 4,1% of the total. Shipments by ship have registered a decline in the last five years; In 2019, 724.196 tons were shipped by ship, 5,3% of the total, which amounted to 13,6 million tons.
In 2023, a total of 10.373 tons of fresh fruits and vegetables were also exported by rail and 10.650 tons by plane, according to data from the Department of Customs and Excise, processed by the Spanish Federation of Associations of Producers and Exporters of Fruits, Vegetables, Flowers and Live Plants (FEPEX), as well as 2.340 tons for postal traffic.
