Expansion and growth: projections for the blueberry industry

Cort Brazelton, Betina Ernst, Amine Bennani and Pieter Zietsman referred to the projections of the blueberries industry in different exporting countries, the changes in the market and the consequences of the pandemic, among others, in an exclusive event organized by Blueberries Consulting.

On Tuesday August 3 the opening day of the International Blueberry Month 2021, in its second consecutive edition. With assistants from more than 15 countries such as Chile, Peru, the United States, Mexico, Spain, Morocco, South Africa, Portugal, Switzerland, Belgium and Italy among others.

The online event, which will be shown throughout the month of August, has more than twenty international specialists in the blueberry industry who will share their knowledge and exclusive information with all those attending the event.

Geographical advantages

South Africa and Morocco They are currently one of the countries that have been gaining strength in the industry for the production of this fruit. Although they are not one of the leading export countries, they have been taking strong participation at the global level. In the case of South Africa, for example, thanks to its strategic geographical position which provides proximity to major poles of the European market and thanks to its climatic conditions, today they offer high quality fruit. This is how the Berry Unit Manager at Topfruit Western Cape Company, Pieter Zietsmann, in his analysis of the South African blueberry industry. “One of the great advantages that we have as a country is the beneficial climate that we have. Our nights are acclimatized and the day is hot, which contributes to the quality of the food ”he highlighted.

For its part, Amine Benanni, President of the Moroccan Association of Red Fruit Producers, He referred to the differentiation factors that Morocco currently has in the production of this fruit. Being a country in North Africa, it is a nation that has comparative advantages that ensure the availability of water for their crops. “Our main destination is Europe; countries like Spain, England, Russia. We have a season from October to June ”he says.

It has become a pop-up focus supplying a large part of Europe, Asia, the Netherlands and Australia with its products, which 28% of its local production corresponds to blueberries and of these a 95% of them are exported to different markets.

La expert in fruit markets, Betina Ernst, He also referred to the situation of the blueberry industry in Latin America highlighted the country's trajectory as an actor in the field. "Chile is the one who started on issues of this fruit and has done great marketing as a country brand, which has also helped to position the fruit worldwide," he added.
