According to projections of the Association of Agricultural Producers Guilds of Peru (AGAP)

Exports of grapes and blueberries would exceed US $ 1.000 million, but avocados no longer

The price of avocado is very low in the world. It is trading at less than US$ 2.00 in the period. This has made many offers cannot be sent.

Although in recent years Peru -and the world- has faced the covid-19 pandemic, rise in international prices, increase in maritime freight, war in Ukraine, among others, shipments of agro-export products do not They have stopped growing.

For this year, Peruvian exports of agricultural products are expected to total US$9.700 billion, an increase of close to 10% compared to 2021, according to projections by the Association of Agricultural Producers Guilds of Peru (AGAP).

Only in the category of fruits and vegetables, exports would go from US$ 4.970 million last year to US$ 5.400 million in 2022, explained Gabriel Amaro, executive director of the union.

Grape and blueberry exports would continue to be at the "top" in terms of the products that would generate the most money and would exceed -once again- US$ 1.000 million. However, the one who would not be able to “repeat the dish” would be the avocado, he indicated.

“Weather conditions are positive, but the issue is cost overruns. The freights are 4 to 5 times more; in labor, raising the minimum wage for a sector that paid bonuses for productivity does not make sense, among others”, he referred.

The avocado is already finishing its season (August). Last year, US$ 1.049 million of that fruit were exported, but – estimated Amaro – this year, unfortunately, US$ 1.000 million would not be reached. In fact, last year -as of June- US$628 million were sold, but in the first half of this year it stood at US$518 million.

"The price of avocado is very low in the world. It is trading in the world at less than US$ 2.00 in the period. This has made many offers cannot be sent. Prices go down, under normal conditions sometimes it can be absorbed, but now all the cost overruns and the Peruvian policy, which is not competitive, have come to us, ”he stressed.
