Fall Creek expands beyond blueberries with acquisitions in Italy

The addition of Berryplant and Berrytech marks the first step for the US company, previously focused on blueberries, towards raspberries and blackberries, and expands its presence in the global berry business.

Fall Creek, an American company specializing in genetics and nurseries blueberry, acquired the Italian companies Berryplant and Berrytech, in a deal that marks its first expansion outside of the business focused exclusively on this species.

Both firms, based in Trentino, are linked to the improvement and production of plants, with a focus on raspberries and blackberries, and their incorporation opens a new stage for Fall Creek within the global berry business.

From blueberry to Rubus

The purchase brings Fall Creek into the world of Rubus for the first time, adding to its structure a platform already developed in genetics and nurseries for other species.

Referring to the transaction, Marc de Beer, CEO of Fall Creek, noted that the company is excited to join forces with what he described as a “fantastic breeding platform and nursery at Rubus.”

Along those lines, he added: “By bringing together talented people with a shared purpose, we hope to better serve the berry industry and accelerate our mission.”

Genetics, plants and grower support

The operation also expands a model that Fall Creek had already been developing in blueberry and that combines three elements: genetics, plant production and technical support to producers.

De Beer maintained that the move is in line with the company's long-term strategy, which focuses on supporting growers through better varieties, better plants, and stronger on-the-ground support.

“As global demand for high-quality berries continues to grow, we believe the future belongs to organizations that combine good science, strong customer relationships, and a long-term commitment to innovation,” he said.

The executive added that the acquisition strengthens the company's ability to generate value throughout the entire supply chain.

“At Fall Creek, we believe that better varieties, better plants, and strong support for producers can generate value throughout the chain, leading to exceptional fruit for consumers,” he stated.

The value of the Italian platform

The acquisition of Berryplant and Berrytech further strengthens Fall Creek's presence in Europe. Both companies operate from Trentino, one of Italy's most renowned berry-producing regions, and have built a specialized technical base in propagation and varietal selection.

That knowledge, combined with the relationships developed with producers and the experience accumulated at Rubus, is part of the value that Fall Creek seeks to integrate in this new stage.

A larger berry company

The acquisition represents a significant step in the company's evolution. Fall Creek is not abandoning the identity it built around the blueberrybut it is beginning to expand towards a more diverse presence within the berry business.

In strategic terms, the operation demonstrates a strategic move by transitioning from a company focused exclusively on blueberry to a platform with a wider reach in genetics and nurseries for different species.
